Building a New Workshop

Those of you that know me are well aware that I am very good at making messes. I can turn a room into a disaster area within five minutes without breaking a sweat. So what I am about to undertake is right up my ally.

Let me get you up to speed with what I am going to attempt.

When my wife and I were first married we owned a small cape in Pawtucket that had a basement that was half finished and half was a workshop. I LOVED that workshop! I was teaching myself how to do some basic woodworking and I was starting to get somewhat good at it. My wife and I had two daughters and we decided that we did not want to raise them in the city, so we sold the house and moved to the town of Burrillville, RI.

The house that we bought was a raised ranch with a fully finished basement. The only place that I was now able to do any woodworking would be outside of the house and I slowly drifted away from it.

Fast-forward seventeen years and one of my daughters is away at college and my youngest will be leaving in the fall. Our finished basement is not being used to its full potential. So I am making a change.

The livingroom and “kitchen” area is one room in my basement and I was going to use it as the workshop. The only problem is that there are no doors. Woodworking creates a lot of dust and fumes that I do not want to go throughout the house. I also use this area for my office where I do all of my videos, websites and other computer work. I also have the hub of my home’s network in this area and having dust penetrate these devices is really not a good idea.

So I am going to build a wall to split this area into two rooms and hopefully this will keep the dust and fumes in the room that I will use as my workshop.

The problem is that we (or I should say I) have a lot of junk in the basement and do not have anywhere that I can safely store it while I do this construction. The second problem is that I have not really done any finish carpentry in my life… not even close, nor have I ever built a wall or worked with sheetrock. This is going to be an adventure.

So I guess that I am going to learn how to do this “trial by fire” method and just jump right into it. Wish my wife and family luck during my endeavour.

I will be doing a series of YouTube videos that will show my progress and I will highlight the new tools that I will be using. I will also post to this blog and show what I have been working on.
